The Must-Read Book Club

Allison Richard: I watched her TED talk on vulnerability which resonated on many levels so I wanted to read "Daring Greatly". Right around that time she published "Rising Strong". My sister and I talked about it and she bought a copy for me for Christmas, so this was my first in depth experience with Brown's work.

YCNYC: Favorite quote?

AR: "I want to be brave with my life. And when we make the choice to dare greatly, we sign up to get our asses kicked. We can choose courage or we can choose comfort, but we can't have both. Not at the same time....

Vulnerability is not winning or losing: it's having the courage to show up and be seen when we have no control of the outcome. Vulnerability is not weakness; it's our greatest measure of courage."

YCNYC: What one person would you recommend this book to?

AR: Someone who wants to take responsibility for their life and spiritual growth. One who understands and embraces that you can't truly appreciate the amazing highs of life without also equally experiencing the heartbreaking lows.

YCNYC: What moment or part resonates with you the most?

AR: "Owning our story and loving ourselves through that process is the bravest thing we'll ever do... But it takes more than courage to own your story. We own our stories so we don't spend our lives being defined by them or denying them. And while the journey is long and difficult at times, it is the path to living a more wholehearted life."

I've always been one to want to own my story, but until I read this I wasn't aware of how much I still needed to work on loving myself through that process.
