The Must-Read Book Club
Olgu Merandy: I discovered Thich Nhat Hanh on Krista Tippet’s show Speaking of Faith in 2013 which is now called On Being. I was running in Central Park and listening to her interview with Thich Nhat Hanh on podcast. His subtle voice and the simplicity that he carried in the practices that he shared made me curious. The next day I went to a bookstore to see some of his books and ended up choosing “Peace Is Every Step”.
YCNYC: Favorite quote?
OM: "We need to practice mindfulness all the time so that we plant healing, refreshing seeds in ourselves. Then, when we need them, they will take care of us.”
YCNYC: What one person would you recommend this book to?
OM: To someone who is looking for simple and effective practices to transform their lives this book can both encourage and guide you along the way.
YCNYC: What moment or part resonates with you the most?
OM: Thich Nhat Hanh’s offering is a practice of everyday life mindfulness, which includes Buddhist practices that one can practice no matter what they believe but most importantly he takes you through the practices from a felt and consciously lived place. Chapter by chapter you contemplate with him and really see that you can live a better life if you start seeing your experiences more consciously. Each day we can strengthen our mindful practices to some degree and can cultivate a better experience both for ourselves and for everyone around us. Throughout the book each chapter and story lit up something in me.
