The Must-Read Book Club
Carrie Owerko: I have enjoyed reading many books by Oliver Sacks. And these essays are exquisite. I came across them individually when they were first published in the NY times. They have been republished in this beautiful small volume called Gratitude.
YCNYC: Favorite quote?
CO: "There will be no one like us when we are gone, but then there is no one like anyone else, ever."
YCNYC: What one person would you recommend this book to?
CO: This small collection is for anyone who loves the art of the essay. It is a wonderful introduction to Oliver Sacks, who was a brilliant writer, doctor, and an amazing storyteller. His voice was unique, bringing his deep love of science, art and the love of life into a rich and integrated whole.
YCNC: What moment or part resonates with you the most?
CO: "I cannot pretend I am without fear. But my predominant feeling is one of gratitude. I have loved and been loved; I have read and traveled and thought and written. I have had intercourse with the world, the special intercourse of writers and readers.
Above all, I have been a sentient being, a thinking animal, on this beautiful planet, and that in itself has been an enormous privilege and adventure."
