The Must-Read Book Club

Michelle Maros: Funny enough the author is my mom. For my entire life I heard so much about meditation and mindfulness, but as a teenager and young adult, I always thought it was weird, as kids tend to do. When going through a difficult time in my life, I leaned on the teachings that my mom had always taught me as I noticed that she always seemed to handle strife with grace. I began to use tools and teachings in the book to get me to the other side. "The Practice" is a compilation of what she's learned in the 30 years she's practiced meditation. I find it's a great book to open up on any given day for a little inspiration or pick-me-up.

YCNYC: Favorite quote?

MM: "There is no better way to let go of the past than by being in the present."

YCNYC: What one person would you recommend this book to?

MM: Someone who is looking to start a meditation or mindfulness practice, and isn't sure where to begin! I also would recommend it to someone who is desiring a a daily practice but is having difficulty finding the structure.

YCNC: What moment or part resonates with you the most?

MM: There is a story in the book about a Native American Indian, who was asked what were his two tips for living such a long and full life. He said, "I do not drink soda, and I wake up every morning in the new day. I let the day go to sleep with me at night, never knowing if I am going to wake up the next morning. So if it do wake up, I am so happy that i have a great day in front of me." This gave me such insight on the fact that each day truly is a gift. We don't know if we are going to see a new day. Learning to let go and be present has been huge for me.
