The Must-Read Book Club

Sage Caprice Abowitt: Originally, I was gifted "The Prophet" by my best friend from college. She gave it to me for my 23rd birthday, with a piece of her late mother's jewelry taped into the section "On Friendship." Still one of the best and most meaningful gifts I've ever received!

YCNYC: Favorite quote?

SCA: I love this line from 'on Children': "Your children are not your children. They are the sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself. They come through you but not from you, And though they are with you yet they belong not to you."

YCNYC: What one person would you recommend this book to?

SCA: This book is definitely for everyone. Simple, beautiful, and accessible to all.

YCNC: What moment or part resonates with you the most?

SCA: I love so much of this work - 'on Children,' 'on Friendship.' But I've been most drawn to 'on Marriage' this week. I've been looking for readings that might be appropriate for my upcoming wedding, and I thought I should go back and read "On Marriage". I still haven't decided whether or not we'll use it for our ceremony, but I love the sentiment of "let there be spaces in your togetherness." I'm finding that many common wedding readings and sample ceremonies don't necessarily offer that idea of autonomy within marriage. It's an important piece of partnership!
