The Vedic Astrologer: Super Moon For Seekers

Feel like wandering off? The full moon of Dec 13, 2016 is a brilliant super moon that will light the path to inner freedom. This full moon stirs up the animal spirits of the heart and awakens the restless search for true fulfillment. Appearing up to 30% brighter, this full moon is the third in a series of perigee super moons (which means that it orbits closest to the earth). If you have recently been feeling an itch to travel or if your mind has been roaming away from its work, you may be sensing the pull of this super moon’s tide. In Vedic Astrology, the full moon will illuminate the area of the sky known as Mrigashirsha, (Mriga = deer, shirsha = head). It is found in the constellation of Orion the hunter and has long been revered as the restless searching star. Take a moment to consider what you search for and for what gives you a sense of fulfillment. Like a gentle deer that is hunted, Mrigashirsha inspires an endless chase after desire. This full moon can create great longing to find one’s tribe and can connect others in true and meaningful ways. Under this full moon, curiosity can inspire travel to new places and the pursuit of exciting new experiences.

Deity Soma (God of the Moon) whose vehicle is the deer/antelope.

Soma is the lunar deity that rules Mrigashirsha and soma is also the nectar that drips from moonlight. The angels and the demons both seek out this nectar-elixir for its blissful and empowering effect. But take heed, anxiety can run high on this full moon. Like a startled deer that quickly flees danger, unequal power dynamics between people may suddenly come into focus. Be wary of confrontations and try to avoid drama. Also, with Saturn closely conjunct to the sun (fully combust on Dec 10) your energy may be low. If your mind is prone to worry, take it easy and try not to be overly critical of yourself and others. This is the final full moon of the year preceding the Winter Solstice (Dec 21),. It is an ancient yearly turning point that is auspicious for planning, envisioning and vetting your heart. What do you want your life to look, feel, sound, taste, and smell like? Where would you like to go? Use this full moon to allow your mind to wander in the field of possibility. Visualizing and speaking your intentions aloud for 2017 has exceptional power right now.
