The Must-Read Book Club

Julie Dohrman: I’d heard of Amanda Palmer, most famous for her million-dollar Kickstarter success story, and knew that she was a performance artist and musician. She is widely known for being close to her fans, by interacting directly with them on social media, and uses social media to rally community, which is the part I find extremely inspiring!

YogaCity NYC: Describe it in five words.

JD: Gratitude is the antidote to fear.

YCNYC: Favorite Quote?

JD: "Those who can ask without shame are viewing themselves in collaboration with—rather than in competition with—the world.

Asking for help with shame says: You have the power over me.

Asking with condescension says: I have the power over you.

But asking for help with gratitude says: We have the power to help each other.”

YCNYC: Who would you recommend this book to?

JD: Anyone looking for inspiration to get off their asses, work some of their shit out, and move ahead with what the world needs them to be doing!

YCNYC: What moment or part resonates with you the most?

JD: I loved reading about Amanda’s journey as a curious and hungry artist who recognizes that she’s stepping into a creative crack in the wall of perception that surrounds our abilities to ask and receive—and exposing it. She bravely changed the field, not just with her record-breaking crowdfunding, but her insistence on remaining real.
